Searching the Ely Library Catalog
At the Ely
Library home page, click on the Ely Library Catalog link to
search for books, cd's, videos,
and titles of journals and newspapers
available in the Ely Library.
To search a subject, enter the word(s) or phrases
you wish in the box and click Search. Click in the drop down
menu for Author Browse, Title, Journal Title Keyword,
Keyword
Search, etc. to change your search field.
Simple Search (default)
Use for subject, author, title, call number,
key word or journal title searches.

The default search is for Subject Browse.
Enter your subject in the search box.
-
To search another field click in the drop down menu
for Author Browse, Title, Journal Title Keyword, Keyword
Search, etc.
-
Type the word that you want to search for. Do not
include any punctuation.
-
To change the number of records you want displayed
on a page, click on the drop down menu. The default is 25.

Click the Search button to begin your search.
-
At the next screen, click on an appropriate Heading
to locate individual titles.
-
Call numbers and location information will be listed
under each title. Click on a title for more information.

Searching Hints:
-
AUTHOR Searches. Enter last name first
name. The system truncates on the right automatically and retrieves
a list of Authors that may be browsed. Entering Einstein will retrieve
a browseable list of all authors named Einstein. Links of
books
by these authors will appear.

Examples:
-
einstein al (will retrieve Al, Albert, Alfred, etc.)
steinbeck, john (will retrieve books
by John Steinbeck)
TITLE Searches. Enter the title or series
name. Enter as much of the title as you know. The system automatically
truncates on the right and retrieves a browseable list of Titles. Omit
articles ("a", "an", "the") that appear at the beginning of a title.
Examples:
guns of navarone
portrait of the artist (this retrieves "portrait of the artist as a young
man")
SUBJECT Searches. Enter a Library of
Congress Subject Heading (LCSH is located in Reference) or use a general
subject to retrieve a list of subjects. The system automatically truncates
on the right.
Examples:
"birth control" will locate materials because it is an LCSH term.
"drugs and gangs" is not an LCSH term so it will not locate materials.
Note: To Search for a topic not in LCSH, use
the Builder,
Keyword,
or Command Searches.
Detailed
Record
Click on a title in the list to display bibliographic
information (title, author, publisher, physical description) about a record.
If there is more than one record in the list from which you selected the
title, you can view the remaining records by clicking
.
You can save,
print,
or e-mail
information about the current records displayed (including
call numbers and locations) from the bottom of the details screen.
To begin a new search, click
at the top of the page. To return to your list, click
.
For the list of subjects, click on
.
Some items have a
which lists the chapter titles.
Keyword
Search
Use to find words located anywhere in a record,
whether they are relevant to a subject or not.
- Return to the Simple Search screen.
Click on the drop down menu next to Find Results in. Select
Keyword Search.
- Click the Limits
icon before entering your keyword search if you want to limit it by publication
date, by location, or by material type (e.g. video recordings). Click
on Set Limits.
- Type the word(s) you want to search for in the appropriate
text box.
- Use a question mark (?) after a search term to
indicate truncation: comp?
- Use quotation marks to search for specific phrases:
"world wide web"
- Use a plus sign (+) before a term to indicate an
essential term: +internet
- Use an asterisk (*) before a term to indicate an
important term: *explorer
For example, type: comp? "world wide web" +internet
*explorer.
- Click the Search button to begin your search.
Click the Reset button to clear the search page.
Builder Search
Use to find records with words anywhere
or in specific fields (subject, title, etc.) of records.

Return to the Simple Search screen.
Click on the Builder file tab to select a Builder Search.

Click the Limits
icon before entering your keyword search if you want to limit it by publication
date, by location, or by material type (e.g. video recordings). Click
on Set Limits.

Type in the search term(s) you want to find in the
Search
For box. (Punctuation, case, and word order are ignored.) Search terms
are automatically truncated on the right.

Default search criteria can be modified for your
search:
-
Select from the drop-down list whether you want to
search for a phrase (default), all the search terms, or any
of the search terms.
-
Select which Boolean operator you want applied to
the next search term(s): AND (default), OR, or NOT
-
Narrow your search further by entering other information
in the Search For boxes and selecting options and boolean operators
from the drop down menus as needed.

Click the Search button to begin your search.
Click the Reset button to clear the search page.
To Locate
Materials
From the Title List, look for the LOCATION and CALL
NUMBER of the item:
-
REFERENCE (first floor of Library)
-
STACK (take elevator to floors 2 through 5
past the Circulation Desk--Refer to Stack Guide for more detail)
-
ERC or Education Resource Center (library mezzanine
- accessible via staircase at rear of first floor).
-
PERIODICAL STACK (first floor of Library)
Click on the title link to identify the Status
of the Item (Not Charged means it is available). Information about
the latest issues received for specific journal titles will be located
here (scroll down) if a journal title is retrieved.
To
Print, Save, or Email Records
-
Mark the record(s) that you want to print,
save, or email on the Titles List (click the box on the left)--otherwise,
you can choose to save all of what you see displayed on the page.
-
Find Print, Save and E-mail options
at the bottom of each page.
-
Under Select Download Format, choose
Brief Record, Full Record, or EndNote Citation.
-
Under Records Option, select "All on page"
in order to save/print the entire display or "Selected on Page" to save/print
only those options you checked.

To Print,
click the button To Print or Save - Click Here to print the record(s).;
The marked records will be reformatted into ASCII text. Select Print
from the File menu on your browser (top of screen).

To Save,click
the button To Print or Save - Click Here to save the record(s).;
The marked records will be reformatted into ASCII text. Select Save
from the File menu on your browser to save to the A:\ drive (a 3.5" formatted
diskette is needed).

To E-mail
Enter the email address. Then click the EMAIL icon.
-
Once you have saved or printed the records, click
to clear the checkmarks from all of the current titles.
Course Reserve
Search
A Course Reserve search allows you to search
for items on reserve for various classes. To perform a Course Reserve
search:
-
Return to the Simple Search screen.
Click on the Course Reserve file tab.
-
Select one item from one (or more) of the following
drop-down lists: Instructor, Department, Course, or Section.
-
Note: you cannot Limit a course reserve search.
Click the Search button to begin your search.
Click the Reset button to clear the search page.
Limiting
a Search
You can limit Keyword,
Builder,
and some Heading
searches by:
Year (of publication), Language, Type, Medium, Location,
and Place of Publication.
Use this option to find videorecordings, sound recordings,
curriculum kits, etc.

You must Set Limits before entering terms
to search. If you forget to do this, you will have to re-enter your
search terms and re-select search options.

Note: You cannot limit Subject Heading or
Course Reserve searches even though the button is present on these screens.
-
To limit your search by date of publication, type
the four digits in the Year text box. Click the appropriate button in front
of the date range that you want to find.[equals symbol (=); greater than
symbol (>); less than symbol (<); and Range (type in both dates)].

To limit your search by Language (e.g. Spanish),
Type (e.g. serial), Medium (e.g. videorecording), Location (e.g. Reference),
and Place of Publication, click on the appropriate drop-down list and select
the limiting criteria.

Click the Set Limits button to resume the search.
Click the Reset button to clear the search.
