SPORTDiscus
SPORTDiscus provides references to materials covering all aspects of sports
and movement science including physiology, physical education, training,
therapy, etc. Journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations
are indexed, as are materials in many languages.
ACCESS: At the Ely Library Home Page (http://www.lib.wsc.ma.edu/),
click on Quick Links to Databases, choose SPORTDiscus.
For Off Campus Access go to the Off-Campus
Database Menu Page (http://www.lib.wsc.ma.edu/offcampdbmenu.html) and
choose SPORTDiscus and follow directions to logon.
Basic Search:
Enter your search terms or keywords in the dialog box labeled Find.
Click on Search.
Use an asterisk * to search for derivations of words: injur* finds
injuries, injury, injured.
Limit Your Results:

Limiting to Linked Full-Text will restrict results to documents
availabe in full-text from EBSCOhost databases. (NOTE: this limit is not
recommended as it will dramatically reduce your results)

Limiting to Year Published allows you to enter ranges of years for
the publication dates of documents.
-
Limiting to English Abstract Available will display documents with
abstracts in English, but not necessarily documents published in English.
-
Limiting by Language will find documents published in a particular
language (Advanced Search only).
-
Limiting by Country will find documents published in a particular
country (Advanced Search only).
-
Limiting by Publication Type will restrict results to types such
as Journal Article, Videocassette, etc.
-
Limiting by Database Subset will find documents from a particular
subset such as "Handicapped/Disabled Sport and Recreation Documents", or
international document subsets such as "Heracles" (France), "Atlantes"
(Spain), AAFLA, the Olympic Museum Library Database, and other databases.
Expand Your Results
-
Apply related words will include results with words similar to your
search terms.
-
Also search within the full-text will search your keywords within
the full-text of articles in the database.
-
Boolean/Phrase will search your terms together as a phrase and separately
joining then with AND.
Advanced Search:
-
Click on Advanced Search (just below the Basic Search dialog
box).
-
You may Select a Field to search such as TI title, SO source, SU
Subjects
-
You may use the connectors AND, OR, NOT to connect search terms in various
fields.

Results will be listed chronologically, with the most recent publications
listed first.
-
Choose links from Narrow Results by Subject to focus your results
on a particular topic.

Limit your results by Linked Full Text or English Abstract
Available or adjust the dates and click Update Results.

Click linked titles for full citation records.
-
Cite Icon :
Provides citation formats for the record you are viewing in AMA,
APA, Chicago/Turabian, MLA, and Vancouver/ICMJE, and it allows you to export
the citation to bibliographic management software - EndNote, ProCite, Reference
Manager, RefWorks, BibTeX, etc.
Accessing the publications

Notes:This title is held locally indicates that the library subscribes
to print copies of the journal. Check the Full
Text Periodical Directory (http://www.lib.wsc.ma.edu/cgi-bin/ft_journals.cgi)
to determine coverage dates for our print subscription.

Full Text availability: From your results, click

For articles without a full-text link, choose Click
Here to Check Availability in the WSC Full Text Periodical Directory
and search for the periodical in which the article was published. The Directory
will determine whether the library has access to the full-text.
Printing, Emailing, Saving citations.

Create a list of citations by clicking
for
each citation.

click on the
link to retrieve
your list.

Select one of the following:

Print button
:
This
will bring you to the Print Manager.
-
Click on "Estimate Number of Pages" to see total number of pages to be
printed.

Click Print and hit enter.
-
NOTE: PDF Full Text can only be printed from the Adobe
PDF version.
Click on the
Link. (Adobe Acrobat Reader must already be installed)
In the Adobe file, click on the Adobe Printer icon
to print.

Email button
:
This will bring you to the Email Manager.
-
Enter your full e-mail address (e.g. bsmith1234@wsc.ma.edu) and a Subject.
-
Under "Include when sending," chose from the following:
-
PDF as separate attachment (when available)
-
Standard Fields (Detailed citation and abstract, Brief Citation, etc.)
-
Citation Format (APA, MLA, etc.)
-
Click on Send. You will get an acknowledgement and can then click
on Continue to return to the your search. Your e-mail message will arrive
from ephost@epnet.com with the subject you provided.

Save button
: This will bring you to the Save Manager. Save your
document to a formatted disk in the A drive or to a USB flash/thumb drive
-
Under Articles, chose Additional citation details and abstract;
HTML
Full Text (when available); or HTML link(s) to article(s). Note:
You must be looking at a PDF Full Text document in order to save a file
in PDF format.

Click Save.
-
Choose File from your browser, then Save As.
-
Be sure to save as a plain text file (.txt) or an HTML file (.html). Name
your file.

Click
to return to
your search.
Accessing the Thesaurus
-
The Thesaurus allows you to focus your search by identifying and
searching subject headings.
-
To access the Thesaurus, from the top toolbar click the Thesaurus
link.
Searching the Thesaurus
-
Enter a subject in the Browse for textbox search and click Browse
-
This will bring you to the alphabetical listing of Thesaurus terms. Click
any term to display details screen.
-
The details screen shows Scope Notes (definition), Broader Terms
and Narrower Terms for subjects.
-
Check relevant terms and add to search by clicking Add.
-
Add to search using "or" searches for either of the terms. (using
"and" requires all terms in the results).
-
The Thesaurus will plug terms into the top search box. Click Search
to perform search for these terms.
