Access: Open
a Web browser and follow these instructions for access on or off campus.

On campus: At the Ely Library
home page, click on Quick Links under Databases.

Off campus: Click on Off Campus Access under Databases.

Choose New York Times (1851-2002) from the Quick Links menu or Off
Campus Access database list.
When you are finished with this guide: Start
Searching.
Search Options:

Basic Search:
-
Enter your search terms in the dialog box. Click on the Search button.

You may place limits on your search by selecting one of the Date range
forms and entering specific dates.

Advanced Search: Perform advanced searches
by combining terms and selecting search fields.

Type a word or phrase in the first Search box.
-
Select a search field from the drop-down menu.
-
Choose an operator (AND, OR, etc.) from the drop-down menu.

Type a second word or phrase in the next Search box. Repeat step 2.
-
To add a third search term, repeat steps 3 and 4, but remember that the
use of multiple search terms will narrow your search results.

You may use another drop-down menu (not pictured) to specify an Article
Type (examples: front page, editorial article, obituary, review, display
ad, photo standalone).

You may also limit your search by selecting one of the Date range
forms and entering specific dates.

Click on the Search button.

Search syntax: Use the following operators
and special characters to enhance your searches.
-
Boolean search terms: Use AND, OR, AND NOT to combine
terms when searching (example: johnson and impeachment).
-
Truncation: Use * to represent any number of characters at the end
of a word (example: photo* will find photo(s), photograph(s), photographer(s),
etc.).
-
Wildcard: Use ? to represent a single character within or at the
end of a word (example: wom?n).
-
Quotes: Place a phrase in quotation marks to search it exactly as typed
(example: "war between the states").

Result List: Displays a list of articles
that match your search word(s).
|
Results are displayed in a list format showing article titles, authors
(if any), newspaper name (New York Times), place of publication
(New York, N.Y.), date of publication, the beginning page number,
and the number of pages. Citations in the list are numbered, and may be
marked for later use by checking the box on the left. Format options are
represented by icons. Below is an example of a citation:

How to Print, Save, or Email Your Article.

Display the Article Image or the Page Image. This requires
an Adobe Reader. The following instructions are based on Adobe Acrobat
Reader 5.0 and Adobe Reader 6.0.

To print a copy of an article or page: Click on the Print Button
above
the Adobe Reader navigation bar. This will reformat the page(s) for printing
and activate the "Print" command in Adobe Reader.

To resize images for optimal printing, use the options in the print dialog
box to Shrink large/oversized pages, Expand small pages/Fit
to paper, or Auto-rotate and Center. To select parts of an image
for printing, use the Graphics Select Tool
or the Snapshot Tool
on the Adobe Reader navigation bar to click and drag over the area for
printing, and then click on the print icon.

To save a copy of an article or page to a disk or hard drive: Click
on the Save icon (
or
) on the Adobe Reader navigation bar (the browser save command may not
work). Choose the disk or drive to Save in, and give your article
or page a file name. Images will be saved as PDF files.

To email a copy of an article: Click on the Email button
to email an article summary (citation and abstract) or a PDF image of the
article. Enter the email address (example: yourname@wsc.ma.edu) on the
form. The form also includes boxes for a subject header and message (both
optional). Click on the Send Email button
to complete the process.
