Librarians teaching the ENGL 101 required Information Instruction Component will introduce students to the tools, resources and research skills necessary to complete course assignments and to become critical thinkers and competent users of information important to academic and professional success.  Session effectiveness can be increased with input from instructors on the goals and objectives of research assignments.

Students will be able to:

• Identify the following Library Service Points:

• Locate the following on Computers with Internet Access:
• Ely Library Homepage
• Ely Library Catalog
• a General Topic Database

 
• Identify and locate a book in the Ely Library collection.
• Use the Ely Library Catalog to locate books on a specific topic.
• Use the stack guide to identify the appropriate floor.
• Read and interpret the call number to locate a book.

 
• Identify and locate a periodical article on a specific topic.
• Open a General Topic Database and retrieve an article citation.
• Interpret a citation to identify whether or not the article is available in full-text.
• Print out an article or citation list.

 
• Recognize the difference between Subject Heading (high precision, low recall) and Key Word (low precision, high recall) searches.

 
• Locate a specific journal title in Ely Library.
• Use appropriate tools to find out if the journal/magazine/newspaper is available in Ely Library or is accessible in a different electronic database.

 
• Name two ways of obtaining a book or article which is not available in Ely Library. (Interlibrary Loan, use another library in the area, buy it at a bookstore)
