Provides indexing of scholarly journals with abstracts and many full text
articles focusing on medical disciplines. It includes the text of USP Pharmacopoeia
DI: Volume II Advice for the Lay Patient and Stedman's Medical Dictionary.
Access:
At
the WSC Library Home Page (http://www.lib.wsc.ma.edu/), click on
Quick
Links to Databases. You must use Off Campus Access
if you are not searching from the WSC campus.
Search Options (For the initial
search screen see the example below)
Basic Search:
Enter your search terms, or keywords, in the dialog box labeled
"Find". Click on Search.
You may also Limit your results to Full Text, or Expand*
your
search (not recommended
at this point).
At the top of the Ebscohost screen, you should see a toolbar with buttons:
Click on the Keyword button to use "words, phrases or even complete
sentences" for your search.
Click the Subjects
Button to look through a list of subjects in
an A-Z index.
Click on the
Publications
Button to find a magazine name in
the database.
Click on Medical Dictionary to find definitions of medical terms.
Click on Images to access the Ebsco Image Collections Database.
To Expand your search
"Search within full text articles" will search for occurrences of
your term anywhere in the full text of all records, thus expanding the
number of retrieved records. Many may not be relevant to your needs.
"Also search for related words" will add related terms to your search,
but they will not be defined for you.
Sample Basic Search Screen:
Advanced Search: To conduct a search
using specific fields: article title / author / subject / word(s) in
an abstract / journal name:
Click on Advanced Search (a tab on the toolbar above the initial
search screen).
Type in your search term. To select a field (to search for author, article
title, subject, abstract, journal name, etc.) to be searched, click on
"field codes."
You may use the commands AND, OR, NOT to connect search terms in various
fields.
Scroll down on the page to limit your search by Peer Reviewed (for scholarly
materials),
Number of Pages, Published Date, and Publication Type.
You will find the same options to Expand your search
as from the Basic Search Screen.
Click Search to run your search.
Result List: displays a list of citations
that match your search term(s).
Results from Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition are first displayed
in a list format including:
Article Title, Author, Source (Newspaper, Journal, or Magazine
name), Date, Volume #, Issue, and page/column numbers.
Full Text article availability: Look for
, ,
or (which
may lead to full-text). Click on the highlighted article title or
one of the
Full Text choices to access the complete article.
Click on Add at the right of the record to mark citations or full
text for printing or downloading later. NOTE: PDF full text will
not print out from a Folder list.
Revise your search by clicking on the Refine Search button
at the top left of your result list. This will return you to the original
screen in order to edit your search by adding terms or selecting new limits.
From the RESULT LIST:
To retrieve articles one by one, click on the article title or on one of
the following icons: , .
To retrieve a list of citations or the full text of articles
(but not PDF Full Text), click to Add the citations that you
want, then click on the ""
link to retrieve your list. Select one of the following:
Print
button :
This will bring you to the Print Manager.
Under Articles, "Empty folder after printing" will be checked by default.
This will prevent you from printing the same thing another time.
If you want to save your records, uncheck this box.
You can find out how many pages to expect before you print by clicking
on "Estimate Number of Pages" at the bottom of your screen. Remember that
PDF Full Text will not print from this screen.
Click Print and hit enter. When your print job is complete, click
on to
return to your search.
NOTE: To Print PDF Full Text:
Click on the
Link. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Click on the Adobe Printer icon toward the left of the Article window.
Email button :
This will bring you to the Email Manager.
Enter your full e-mail address (e.g. yourname@foma.wsc.ma.edu) and a Subject
you will recognize.
Under "E-mail content includes," chose from the following:
Additional citation details and abstract
Full Text (when available)
PDF as separate attachment (when available)
Click on Send. You will get an acknowledgement and can then click
on Continue and then to
return to the your search.
Your e-mail message will arrive from ephost@epnet.com with the subject
heading you provided.
Save button :
This will bring you to the Save Manager.
Place a DOS preformatted disk in the A drive.
Under Articles, chose one of the following: Additional citation details
and abstract, or Full Text (when available)
Note: You must be looking at a PDF Full Text document in order to save
a file in PDF format.
Click Save.
Choose file from your browser, then
save as.
Be sure to save as a plain text file (.txt) or an HTML file (.html). Name
your file (no more than 8 characters).
Click to return
to the Save Manager, and again to return to your search.
