ENCYCLOPEDIAS & HANDBOOKS:
Oxford Companion to American Literature (6th ed). By James D. Hart. New York: Oxford Univ., 1995.

This and the following volumes Identify authors, give summaries of works, and define literary schools and movements. A good all-purpose handbook.

The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English. Ed. by Ian Ousby, forward by Doris Lessing. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1993.

This contains entries on both British and American authors, as well as authors in other countries who write primarily in English. Genres, works, and literary schools are also covered.

Oxford Companion to English Literature (6th ed). By Margaret Drabble. New York: Oxford, 1995.

Useful for identification of proper names, titles, allusions, and terms.

Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia (4th ed.). By Bruce Murphy. New York: Harper Collins Publishers, 1996.
    (REF PN41 .B4 1996)
A handy one-volume reference to identification of writers, summaries of specific works, and definitions of literary terms. Covers all periods of world literature. Useful for tracking down literary allusions.

Encyclopedia of the Essay. Ed. by Tracy Chevalier. London ; Chicago : Fitzroy Dearborn, 1997.

This large volume contains essays on authors who are generally known for their work as essayists. Entries include writers who are also known for other genres, but focus on the description and criticism of their shorter works. Valuable references are provided for extended criticism on works and authors.

The Fiction Dictionary. Ed. by Laurie Henry. Cincinnati, OH: Story Press, 1995.

Here find terms related to both short and long works of fiction such as "second person point of view", "diegesis", "le mot juste", "moral fiction", etc.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

This 23 volume dictionary is useful for tracing word history and historical usage at different periods. Quotations illustrate usage.

Dictionary of Foreign Terms (2nd ed.). Rev. and Updated by Charles Berlitz. New York: Crowell, 1975.

Useful for translating foreign quotations that appear in literature.

This multi-volume work provides biographies and bibliographies. Check the last volume for an index to the whole set, or use the Gale Literary Index online <http://www.lib.wsc.ma.edu/dbalpha.htm#Gale Literary Index>. Volumes of particular interest are:

Books about an individual short fiction author can be found by doing a subject search using the author's name as a subject heading. For example, type Twain, Mark and find several books about Mark Twain.

There are three major subdivisions in this seven volume set: Essays; Authors; and Current Authors. The first includes material on geographic regions, ethnic groups, historical roots of the genre, etc. The Author section contains summaries of criticism alphabetically arranged by author, and the Current Author subdivision includes articles written almost entirely by the authors themselves. Articles include bibliographies and index.
