Advanced Search:
JSTOR defaults to the advanced search page. Enter your search terms.
Here is an example of the search screen:
Tips for successful searching:

Use quotation marks around exact phrases.
-
Select the index to search from the drop down menu on the
right: full text, author, article title, abstract, or caption.

Use Boolean operators AND, OR, and NEAR selected from the drop down menu
on the right.
AND finds both words in the same article
OR finds articles with either term
NEAR finds articles where the keywords occur within 5, 10, or 25 words of each
other.
- You may limit your search by type (article works best) and/or
date, and/or language, and/or journal title. See example:

Another way to limit your search is to select disciplines or journals
to search. Click in the check box to select.
Basic Search:
Click on the Basic Search tab at the top of the page. Enter your
search words in the dialog box.
Tips for Basic and Advanced Searching:

Searches from an individual session are saved; they can be rerun using
the dropdown menu at the bottom of the page.

Search for both singular and plural words by adding ampersand (&) to
the end of singular word. Plurals identify both regular (cat/cats)
and irregular (knife/knives).

Find variations of words by adding the # character at the end of your search
word. For example: operat# will find operate, operates, operation,
operator, etc.
Article Locator:
Use this feature only if you have the
article citation or part of the citation.

Click on the Article Locator tab at the top
of the screen.

Enter your article information in the form.
Browse:
-
Click on Browse to search for journals by discipline, title or publisher.

Selecting a title will take you to a range of volumes available for that
title. From there, you can select a particular volume, issue, and then
an article.
The citations of search results are displayed with choices for you
to select:

Click Article Information to get the full citation, abstract, and
other bibliographic information. Click on the References tab
to see the notes included in the article. You may also select the
tab Articles Citing this Article to find additional information.

Page of First match refers to the first occurrence of one
of your search terms. If you entered more than one term, First Match
may refer to any of the terms.

Click PDF to view the full text of your article.
Printing
- Click Print from the article list or from the full text of the
article.
- Click Proceed with printing using PDF: High Quality. (A
new window will open with Adobe Acrobat Reader. When the article appears,
click the browser's Print button.)
- Saving: Note that the file size for most articles will not fit on
a floppy diskette. You will need to use a Zip disk.
- Click Download
- Select a format - PDF High quality is recommended; PDF Economy
downloads a Smaller file size with fax-quality resolution.
- Ater the file opens in Adobe Acrobat, click on the Save to Disk icon
,
name the file, then press Save.
